GHM note: full interviews with full personal data and audios are available upon request. Several interviewees have since managed to arrive in Greece where they are now. Several interviewees have been victims of more expulsions (from the land) and/or pushbacks (at sea). The interviews were given to a large number of volunteers for this GHM project. This is a first version of the work in progress.

1-15. Expulsions from Samos on 15-17 September 2021 (15 interviews)

GHM background note: On 15 September 2021 a boat with 35 persons (including children and babies) arrived in Samos. 27 were expelled on the same day in their boat. On 16 September 2021, 4 managed to reach the Reception and Identification Center of Samos, while another three were expelled by throwing them into the sea: 2 drowned, 1 (IO below) managed to swim to the Turkish shore. On 17 September 2021, 1 was expelled in a boat (https://en.sg.gov.tr/1-irregular-migrant-was-rescued-off-the-coast-of-aydin-20-9-21).

1. Témoignage de FK Evènements du 15/9/2021

On est parti le 15 septembre 2021. On est sorti à 4h du matin pour aller dans l’eau. Le départ était en Turquie. 3h de temps dans l’eau pour arriver à Samos. Dès qu’ils étaient descendu à l’entrer à Samos, ils ont vu une pirogue, ils croyaient que c’était un pêcheur ou peut-être un militaire. Dès qu’ils étaient descendus ils sont tombés dans l’eau, après l’un du membre a accordé le bateau pour revenir dans les montagnes. Dès que les autres sont descendus, ils croient que le pécheur était un militaire et c’est lui qui a appelé le gros bateau numéro 604. On croyait que c’était un pêcheur mais c’était un militaire. Il s’est déguisé comme pêcheur. On était 35 avec les enfants. Dès qu’ils étaient descendus ils ont vu le bateau, ils croyaient que c’était le pêcheur mais c’est lui qui a appelé les militaires du bateau 604. Ils sont venus avec des tirs de fusée des balles, ils crient dans le mégaphone “arrêtez, arrêtez” et ils courent avec eux dans les montagnes. Dans ce groupe il y a un papa qui a laissé ses enfants dans le bateau et ils les ont récupérés pour les frapper. Les militaires étaient en tenu verte. Ceux qui étaient en gros bateau ils étaient en tenu bleu avec la tête cagoulé. Ceux qui étaient en tenu militaires ils étaient devant eux pour les encercler. Après ils ont pris tout le monde dans les pirogues et ont ramené vers le gros bac 604. Ils ont commencé à fouiller et frapper les femmes dans les sous-sols la et dans les trucs les vagins et ont fait sortir tous les objets. Quand ils étaient sur la montagne, certaines personnes ont déjà précédés, 8 personnes, le reste ils les ont rassemblés dans une pirogue pour les ramener dans le grand bateau 604. Ils ont fouillé les gens et mettent même les mains dans le vagin pour faire sortir tout l’argent, dans les fesses, frappent les hommes. Ils nous ont ramené vers le bac 604, dans la pirogue. C’est les militaires qui conduisaient. Ils ont fait toute l’opération avec eux et dès qu’ils ont fini ils les ont ramenés dans le bateau. J’étais dans le bateau qui a ramené les gens vers la Turquie. Quand ils ont mis dans le gros bac, après j’ai fait la crise et ils ont commencé à jeter dans le petit bateau pour ramener en Turquie. Ils ont appelé quand on était en haute mer dans les petits radeaux. Quand les sauveurs de Turquie du 112 étaient venu, ils ont pris tout le monde, ils étaient à l’agonie et après la femme enceinte a accouché. Après 2 jours ils ont récupéré aussi 3 personnes qui étaient cachés. Ils les ont jetés en haute mer et deux personnes sont décédés et un est survivant parce-que il connait la natation. Au retour on était 27. Du coup parmi les 35 personnes, 8 personnes étaient précédées et dont 4 personnes ont réussi à atteindre la quarantaine et les 4 autres après deux jours ils ont renvoyé 3 personnes, 2 étaient mort et 1 a réussi à s’en sortir et après un jour après, une fille encore, celle qui était resté parmi les 4 là, elle était en Turquie. Pour eux, ils ont frappé les hommes sérieusement, les femmes ils ont mis leurs doigts dans les parties intimes, ils fouillent les petits enfants et ont déchiré le pantalon d’une fille qui est venu nu en Turquie pour chercher l’argent. Ils touchent et fouillent partout et n’ont même pas de respect devant une femme. Dès qu’ils étaient à Samos et à Moria [Lesbos] la dernière fois on a était frappé.

2. Témoignage de GN Evènements du 15/9/2021

Nous sommes partis la nuit du 15 et nous sommes arrivés de l’autre côté, vers 7h20, à Samos. Et il y a eu un pêcheur qui nus a aperçu de loin. Nous avons vu il faisait semblant du coup il a appelé la police marine, qui sont les Ninjas. C’était un vieux, un vieux papa, dans les 70 années. C’est lui qui a signalé, appelé les Ninjas Grecs. On n’a même pas accosté parce-que devant nous il n’y avait pas l’espace, les Ninjas d’un côté et le bateau de ce papa de l’autre côté et devant nous de grosses pierres. On n’avait pas le temps mais on a quand même accosté, le moment où j’étais le fil pour attacher aux pierres, les Ninjas vont venir, mais moi j’étais de l’autre côté, je suis monté vers la montagne et les Ninjas sont venus et ont commencé à tirer et ont commencé à nous encercler. Les autres Ninjas étaient déjà sur la montagne et nous nous étions encerclés. Dès qu’ils nous ont aperçus, vraiment c’était la catastrophe. De mon côté ils m’ont attrapé, ils ont commencé à me tabasser, j’ai une vidéo, ils m’ont tabassé sérieusement et me piétiner, des gifles aux joues, beaucoup de gifles et m’ont piétiné et j’étais coincé. J’ai commencé à crier «Seigneur, seigneur » tout le monde était là, certains ont été attrapé, certains étaient encore à la mer donc c’était la catastrophe. Il y avait des femmes enceintes, un frère dont le frère était en choc dans la clavicule, la femme enceinte elle était presque à terme, elle était à terme. Et puis, quand ils ont fini leur manœuvre ils nous ont tous retrouvé, ils nous ont mis dans les dinghys et ont commencé à nous transporter vers leur bateau. Ils commençaient à nous transporter au bord du bateau. Les ninjas ils étaient à peu près, dans le bateau à 15. Ils étaient nombreux ce jour-là. Il y avait d’autres qui étaient en tenu tache tache en tenu militaire. D’autres étaient dans la montagne et d’autre dans le bateau. Il y avait deux groupes. Le bateau de Ninja nous a récupérer et puis c’est tout. Ils ont commencé à nous fouiller, à nous tabasser dans le bateau, ils ont commencé à prendre tout ce que nous avons comme argent, téléphone, les habits. Personne n’est venu avec des habits alors tout ce qu’on avait comme habits était resté sur le bateau. Ils nous ont fait trainer de 9h jusque 16h, on était sur la mer. Ils ont commencé à tourner, tourner, de gauche à droite, ils cherchaient l’endroit pour nous jeter. C’était vraiment la catastrophe, on était là à bord du bateau, ils nous ont interdit de bouger. Il faisait tellement froid et ils faisaient des tours du nord au sud et ils nous ont mis dans… je ne sais pas le terme… c’est comme une piscine. Nous on était là à 16. Au lieu de 8 on était à 16. Et les autres étaient je ne sais pas combien. Oui a 16 personne avec la dame qui était enceinte. On disait que si vous bouger le radeau va se percer, sans sauvetage on était dans le radeau et du coup après je ne sais pas, 1h de temps on a vu le navire coté Turquie venu nous secourir. Le bateau faisait des allers-retours. Ils étaient en train de contrôler le bateau turc, il faisait semblant comme si il y avait personne sur le bateau. Le premier bateau qui nous a secouru c’était l’équipe presse, il y avait les turcs, quelques un qui parlaient français et quelques-uns qui parlaient allemand. Ils nous ont interviewés du côté turc. Ils nous ont filmés tout ça et après les gendarmes turcs sont venus nous récupérer auprès du bateau équipe presse. Il y avait des drapeaux de l’union européenne et le drapeau Turque dans le premier bateau qui nous a récupérés. Parmi l’équipe, il y a seulement 8 qui sont resté de l’autre côté. Ils étaient camouflés, il y avait une fille et 7 garçons. Parmi les 8, il y avait 4 qui sont là dans le camp mais les 3 garçons après nous, après 2 jours les ninjas les ont attrapés, en ville même, les ninjas les ont attrapés et les ont ramenés dans la mer et deux d’entre eux sont morts dans la mer et un est rescapé qui est ici avec nous en Turquie. La fille aussi était resté et on l’a mis dans le radeau seule, elle est ici.

3. Testimony by AJN Events of 15/9/2021

We left on Tuesday night and we arrived Wednesday in the morning. When we arrived in Greece, the police came, they started shooting – I don’t know whether they were real bullets or not – everybody was so scared and we were forty in that team. Some guys jumped out, about ten of them, it was eight guys and two ladies. They jumped out and ran into the forest and climbed the mountain. They ran away. The rest of us, the 30 that were remaining, they caught us, they removed us from whatever we were inside. It was my first experience, I did not know. They put us back in their own boat and then they started torturing us one by one. They called us one by one – I don’t know what happened to any other person – but they were beating the guys randomly and calling the ladies at the back where they asked you to undress. They touch you, they touched my breasts, they touched my down. I was wearing a pad because I am having discharge because of my health situation so I had to pad myself. I put the money I had – 650 euros – inside my vagina. They put hands inside my vagina. I cannot forget the person. He was the tallest guy among the group. He put hand inside my vagina, he removed my money, I started crying. I said “I am sick, I need help” he hit me in the front and the back and he smashed me with his boots. I went and I fell down and I cried until I fainted. The other ladies pulled me because I almost fell off the boat. Then I was crying until I regained myself. The other ladies even asked if they could give me water. They said they don’t give any water. They don’t have anything. The children were crying, it was horrible, a horrible movie. I have never seen anything like that. They told us that they would take us to the hospital, that we should not worry, that we have arrived in Greece, they wanted to save us because what we were inside was not good. They want to save us and take us to the hospital. Even if they have to send us back, they wanted to check if we are ok before they send us back. They really flatter us. When I wanted to take my bag, I told him I have high blood pressure and I have psychological problems. I am on medication and all of my medication is inside my bag. Please let me take my medication so I can drink them. They said no, leave your bag here and then put the bag in the boat and said leave it. Then we entered inside their own boats and they carried us into the middle of the sea and started torturing us. The Turkish gendarmes came to rescue us in the sea. First, there was a boat when I told you that there was [inaudible] and journalists, and some group that we called for help. They answered the call, and they came together so the way they were rescuing us from the balloon that they put us in was in their own boat. Because when the [Greek police] caught us, they beat us they seized everything we had. Our bags, our phones. The phone that we used to call for help, the lady hid it in the baby’s diaper. Thank god, we wouldn’t have had a phone to call for help. I am a human being and I have human feelings. I know that what we tried the other day, others are still trying it. It is not as if it’s compulsory that we should go to Greece. But we are trying for safety. We are trying to enter other European countries in order to have safety, facilities if you are sick, and those kinds of things – that is why we are struggling to go. I think that if the Greek government catches us and don’t want any other immigrants in their country, please for the sake of God, send the people back. Let them not rob us, let them not kill. Let them not traumatize women and children. It is so bad, so bad. We don’t refuse. If they said “you will go back. Don’t come to our country.” It’s ok, it’s enough. Why beating? Why assaulting? Why robbing and killing? We run away from Africa because there is a lot in Africa, especially in Cameroon right now. So why kill us? Don’t kill us, send us back. I have seen that thing. It is evil. Greek people are also human and they are also in the world; in other countries where there are taking care of them. They are living nicely there. Why must their government say they should rob and kill people in the water – immigrants? It is not fair. They are also in other countries. If you look in America, Switzerland, UK, or Canada, you will see Greek people living there comfortably. It’s not fair. I think UN should think about this and they should treat this thing very effectively. This killing should stop. We are not refusing [or saying] that we are not going back. If you tell them go back, they should go back, but don’t kill them. Don’t beat [them], don’t break bones. They beat a boy of 13 years old in front of me, from Congo.

4-5. Témoignage de PDF et PACT Evènements du 15/9/2021

On a quitté Izmir le Mardi vers 4 heures et on est arrivé à Samos le Mercredi (probablement c’a été le 14-15/10). Il y avait presque 40 personnes (…) on est arrivé à Samos à 6:40, on est arrivé le bon matin. Avant d’arriver il y avait un monsieur; quand j’ai été sur le bateau encore j’ai aperçu un monsieur qui était plus loin; j’ai pensé d’abord que c’a été un pêcheur, mais c’a été un indice, celui qui a appelé la police. Il a été seul dans un petit bateau, j’ai observé qu’il n’y avait pas des filets de pêche, rien sur le bateau qui indique qu’il a été pêcheur. Il nous suivait. (…) a peine accostés et il y avait déjà la police derrière nous qui a tiré sur les gens qui ont été encore sur le bateau. Moi je suis sorti du bateau et j’avais l’enfant sur les mains, j’ai essayé de trouver un trou en haut de la colline pour me cacher de la police. Ils ont tiré de leur bateau, mais moi je suis sorti du bateau, et je me suis enfuie en haut de la colline. Comme j’ai pu sentir, parce que moi je me suis enfui et j’ai été déjà en haut de la colline (…) il y avait une personne qui a été déjà là et il a attendu la police. Il y avait au moins 5 policiers qui ont été là-bas; ils nous attendaient comme s’ils ont été prévenus. Ils ont été en tenue noir et le visage en cagoule. Il y avait un qui a été habillé en tenue militaire tache. Ils nous ont torturés, tapés, frappés. Quand je suis arrivé en haut et j’ai essayé de me cacher il y’avait des policiers qui nous ont trouvé et ils nous ont tapé avec les pieds. Moi personnellement, quand ils m’ont attrapé ils m’ont mis avec d’autres dans le bateau. Dans le bateau ils nous ont tous, femmes et hommes, brutalisés. C’est dans le bateau qu’ils ont pris les téléphones ; ils nous ont fouillés partout, ils ont mis les mains dans les fesses des femmes pour enlever de l’argent. Ils ont enlevé les tenus des gens pour chercher s’ils cachaient de l’argent. Ils m’ont pris tous les documents, le passeport, le téléphone et tout l’argent que nous avons eu. Nous n’avons maintenant rien. J’avais tout dans mon sac et ils l’ont pris. Après des heures qu’ils nous ont tabassés, fouillés et ont enlevé tout notre argent et papiers ils nous ont mis dans leur bateau et nous ont emmené jusqu’à la haute mer. Pour des heures ils ont trainé sur la mer comme s’ils ont cherché quelque chose. Un des policiers a regardé avec des jumelles vers la mer la position comme s’il a cherché quelque chose. Seulement vers 13:30, finalement ils nous ont jeté dans le radeau. Quelqu’un qui a pu garder son téléphone a appelé et le bateau de la police turque nous a trouvé. [Son mari parle] Je vais ajouter ce que ma femme a oublié de dire. Ils nous ont tapés et ils nous ont enlevé aussi les chaussures et les vêtements pour chercher si nous cachons de l’argent. Moi personnellement j’ai eu très mal après avoir été tapé par eux. Quand ils nous ont mis sur leur bateau ils ont cherché s’il y avait un bateau turc sur la mer et s’ils les filment. Quand ils ont été certains que personne ne le voie pas du côté turc ils nous ont poussé comme des objets sur la mer tous dans un radeau, même les enfants qui ont été accrochés sur nous. Heureusement ils ne sont pas tombés en mer. C’a été très compliqué. Il y avait déjà sept morts. Dans notre groupe il y avait deux personnes qui sont décédées parce qu’ils ont été jeté dans la mer et ils ne connaissaient pas nager. Eux ils ont été cachés dans la forêt et après être attrapés par la police ils sont morts dans la mer.

6. Témoignage de NMF Evènements du 15/9/2021

Nous sommes partis de la Turquie le 15-09-2021 à 3 heures et nous sommes arrivés au petit matin à Samos. Nous sommes arrivés ce matin dès que on a accosté il n’était pas facile pour nous de sortir du bateau les autres sont tombes dans l’eau et moi-même je suis tombée dans l’eau au moment de quitter le coin la police était déjà là. Nous sommes montés, pour se cacher, dans la forêt la police était déjà dans la forêt. Quand nous sommes arrivés nous avons trouvé une personne dans le bateau. C’est quand on est sorti du bateau que nous avons vu que la police venait. Ils étaient en noir. Déjà sur la montagne on s’est caché et la police est entrée dans la forêt avec les armes et ils ont tiré partout. Moi j’étais caché sur la montagne quand la police m’a trouvée ils m’ont bien tapé, je n’avais plus de force, les autres sont partis. Ils ont bien tapé les garçons. Les grecs m’ont tapé au point où mon enfant sortait déjà et je n’avais pas la force. Ils nous ont ramené à la mer. Les policiers étaient en noir avec leur visage caché. Quand nous sommes montés dans leur bateau les hommes étaient déjà bien frappés. Ils ont déshabillé les hommes et les femmes. Ils ont mis dans la nudité tout le monde, les enfants ils les ont lancés de tous les côtés. L’argent, le téléphone, le sac tous ils ont pris. Nous sommes restés pendant des heures sur le bateau et les policiers ont contrôlé avec les jumelles et quand ils ont vu qu’il n’y a plus personne sur l’eau ils nous ont jeté dans leurs zodiacs. [Tu as eu ton bébé à Izmir, n’est pas ?] Oui il est né à l’arrivée. Et les deux frères qui sont morts dans l’eau, les grecs les ont jetés dans la mer.

7. Témoignage de PMK Evènements du 15/9/2021

Nous avons quitté Smyrne tard dans la nuit et nous sommes arrivés à Samos tôt le matin. Nous étions 35 personnes au total. Avant même d’arriver, nous avons vu un homme qui était dans un bateau qui ressemblait à un pêcheur mais n’était pas un pêcheur. Quelqu’un a dit qu’il l’avait vu au téléphone. Quelques minutes avant l’amarrage, nous avons vu derrière nous un navire portant le numéro 604. Alors que nous commencions à descendre du navire et à essayer de courir vers la montagne, des hommes en vêtements bleu foncé sont apparus qui nous ont poursuivis et nous ont tiré dessus avec des balles en caoutchouc. Les hommes sur le navire étaient vêtus de noir et leurs visages étaient couverts. C’était une dizaine de personnes. Ceux ci-dessous étaient 5-6, certains étaient couverts tandis que d’autres ne l’étaient pas. Finalement, lorsque nous avons été arrêtés, seules 7 personnes ont pu s’échapper. Ils nous ont emmenés à leur bateau et ont commencé à nous battre avec les mains et leurs pieds. Ils nous ont forcés à nous déshabiller. Ils ont pris notre argent, nos téléphones, certains téléphones ont été jetés à la mer et d’autres ont été gardés. Ils ont aussi pris nos papiers. Beaucoup sont revenus presque nus. Même les enfants, ils les ont poussés et frappés. Les femmes ont également été recherchées dans leurs cachettes pour de l’argent. Ils portaient des gants et mettaient leurs doigts dans leurs endroits intimes. Ils ont pris tout l’argent que j’avais, mon téléphone et un petit sac avec mon passeport. Ensuite, ils nous ont emmenés en bateau et nous avons fait des allers-retours pendant un certain temps. Ils ont regardé la mer avec leurs jumelles comme s’ils cherchaient quelque chose, et après plusieurs heures ils ont jeté 2 bateaux pneumatiques dans la mer et nous ont jetés dedans et ils sont partis. Ils ne nous ont même pas donnés des gilets de sauvetage, et ce que nous avions du voyage précédent, ils ne nous l’ont pas rendu. Il nous a trouvés un bateau avec des journalistes anglophones et francophones. Ils nous ont demandés ce qui s’était passé et ils ont pris une vidéo de nous. Ensuite, la police turque est arrivée et nous a emmenés à Smyrne. Une femme qui était prête à accoucher a été emmenée à l’hôpital et elle a accouché. Un homme s’était cassé le bras et lui aussi il a été emmené par le secours à l’hôpital. Ceux qui ont réussi à s’échapper n’étaient que 3 hommes, des Congolais je pense. Ils ont pu atteindre le camp de réfugiés. Je sais que 3 autres hommes, 2 congolais et un ivoirien, ils les ont finalement rattrapés au bout de 2 ou 3 jours et les ont durement frappés. Puis ils les ont mis sur un bateau et les ont jetés à la mer, sans bateau pneumatique, et sans même un gilet de sauvetage. Les deux ont été retrouvés morts et un seul a été sauvé, il a réussi à se rendre à la plage et à prévenir. J’ai entendu dire qu’ils avaient attrapé une fille mais je ne sais rien d’autre.

8. Témoignage d’AMT Evènements du 15/9/2021

Nous sommes partis vers 4 heures d’Izmir, je ne me rappelle pas quelle heure exacte mais ça été très tard et nous sommes arrivés à Samos le matin vers 7 heures. Il y avait un petit bateau avec un homme qui nous suivez et puis nous avons vu un grand bateau plus loin. Avant même d’accoster, c’a été très tôt le matin, il y avait déjà des policiers à la cote qui nous ont attendus. Ils nous ont menacés avec des balles. J’ai essayé de courir pour me cacher vers la montagne mais il y avait d’autres policiers qui ont couru après mois et les autres et ils nous ont attrapés. Ils ont attrapé la plupart des gens. Il y’avait presque 10 personnes qui ont réussi a échappé. 3 personnes, c’a été trois garçons 2 camerounais et un ivoirien ils les ont attrapés plus tard et ils les ont torturés et après ils les ont jetés dans la mer sans bateau pneumatique ni des sauvetages. Deux garçons se sont noyés et la police turque a trouvé leurs cadavres dans les côtes. Les policiers portaient des uniformes bleu foncé avec le visage couvert. Quand la police grecque nous a attrapés le petit bateau nous transporte. Le petit bateau de l’homme qui nous a suivi il nous a transportés dans le grand bateau de police. C’est lui qui a appelé la police. D’abord nous avons pensé qu’il a été un pêcheur, mais il n’a pas été un pêcheur. L’homme qui a été dans le petit bateau, les autres ont dit qu’ils l’ont vu parler au téléphone. Ils nous ont mis dans son bateau en deux groupes et nous ont transportés vers le bateau de la police. La ils nous ont balancé, ils ont torture tout le monde, femmes et hommes, ils ont même balancé les enfants. Ils ont fouillé toutes les femmes dans leurs parties intimes, leurs seins et leurs vagins pour trouver s’ils cachent d’argent. Ils ont pris tout l’argent qu’ils ont trouvé, les téléphones, et mêmes des documents que nous avons avec nous. Même qu’il y avait dans le groupe des policiers une femme c’a été un homme avec le même gant qui a fouille dans les parties intimes de toutes les femmes. Ils ont déshabillé toute le monde et beaucoup même n’ont pas pu prendre leurs vêtements, ils ont retourné sans la plupart de leurs vêtements. Il y’ avait une personne qui est rentre nu. Il y avait une femme enceinte, qui a reçu des coups de pied et à un moment on a pensé qu’elle allait accoucher sur le bateau. [Combien des personnes il y avait dans le bateau qui est parti d’Izmir?] Presque 40 personnes, femmes et hommes. Il y’ avait deux petits-enfants 6 et 7 ans et deux bébés. D’abord la police nous a suivi avec un bateau avant même d’accoster. Aussi il y’avait d’autres policiers qui nous ont attendu à la côte. Je ne me rappelle pas exactement, peut-être 7-8 policiers à la côte et puis 5-6 sur le bateau. J’ai entendu parler qu’il y avait deux personnes qui ont réussi à arriver à la quarantaine. Il y avait aussi une femme, je crois congolaise, que la police a attrapé plus tard dans la ville et elle est rentrée seule en bateau pneumatique. Aussi il avait les 2 garçons qui sont noyés et le troisième qui a réussi à arriver aux côtes turques. [Est que tu peux décrire plus précisément qu’est-ce que la police a fait aux femmes?] Oui la police a déchiré nos vêtements et ils nous ont battus. Il y a eu des femmes qui ont même saignées. Nous étions abattues, et un homme a fouillé avec les doigts dans nos parties intimes pour trouver si nous avons caché de l’argent. Nous sommes toutes été fouillées avec le même gant. Dans le bateau il y avait une femme mais c’a n’été pas elle qui nous a fouillés mais c’a été un homme qui a fouillé toutes les femmes avec le même gant. [Qu’est-ce qu’ils ont fait avec les hommes?] Ils les ont battus aussi. Un homme ils lui ont cassé le bras et quand nous sommes rentrés en Turquie il a été obligé d’aller à l’hôpital pour mettre du plâtre sur son bras cassé. Il souffrait et hurlait de douleur, mais les policiers ont continué à le frapper avec leurs mains et leurs pieds. Tous les hommes ont été torturés par les policiers grecs sur le bateau. Même les enfants ont été battus. Ils ont tourné pour plusieurs heures puis finalement ils ont gonflé deux bateaux pneumatiques et ils nous ont jetés sans bouées de sauvetage. Eux ils sont partis et ils nous ont laissé au milieu de la mer. Heureusement une femme a réussi à cacher son téléphone et grâce à elle nous avons pu appeler et être sauvés par la garde côtière turque. Un bateau est arrivé avec des journalistes français et ils nous ont posés beaucoup des questions. Nous avons décrit ce qui c’est passé et comment la police grecque nous a torturés. Ils ont fait une vidéo. Après un autre bateau est arrivé avec des policiers turques avec lequel nous étions transporté vers la ville.

9. Témoignage d’OV Evènements du 15/9/2021

On amorce la cote de Samos aux environs de 6 ou 7h. La lumière du jour était déjà là. Nous étions je crois vraiment près de 39 personnes, voir même 40. Quelques minutes avant qu’on amorce la cote, on a aperçu un bateau, un bateau du pécheur, on a commencé à s’inquiéter. On a compris qu’il allait certainement signaler notre présence aux Ninjas comme on les appelle. On a commencé à sortir. Les plus faibles sont restés dans l’engin. Le bateau que nous avons vu à distance, qui était de côté. Il nous a aperçus. Le pécheur a du signaler à la police et militaire Ninja. A peine on a accosté, on monte au sommet de la montagne, on suit des coups de feu, c’était nouveau pour tout le monde, ils se sont mis a tiré quand on était en train d’accoster. Ils se sont mis à tirer, à tirer. Beaucoup étaient encore en train de s’échapper. Est-ce qu’ils vont tirer sur nous? A un moment ils ont tiré à côté. On a été pris de panique parce-que dans ce convoi, très peu son arrivé au camp, 2 ou 3 personnes alors que nous étions près de 40 personnes. C’est à partir de ce moment-là que commence le massacre. Ils sont arrivés, il y avait déjà un d’entre eux qui était au sommet de la montagne. On ne sait pas d’où il sortait. Il s’est retrouvé la tout de suite. On ne sait pas. Et un autre qui était un peu plus avancé. Ils se sont mis à la recherche de ceux qui étaient cachés. Ils nous ont neutralisés. Ceux qui étaient déjà de la montagne étaient du nombre de 2. C’étaient des ninjas avec leur cache-nez là. Donc, l’un d’entre eux a remarqué qu’une femme était couché, elle agonisé, il s’est mis à la brutalisé, tabassé correctement. Brutalisé bien même. C’est moi qui l’a appelé, il m’a demandé si je m’exprimais en anglais, j’ai dit que je me débrouille. Il m’a forcé à la réveiller sinon il allait la taper. Il n’a pas cessé de taper, taper, des coups de poing, monter sur son ventre et il m’a forcé à la porter. Ils ont pris tout le monde-là et nous ont conduits. Ils m’ont posé la question de savoir d’où on sort et où et le chauffeur. Le chauffeur a réussi à prendre la fuite. Il n’était pas là. Il m’a dit qu’ils allaient nous demander de remonter sur le bateau et de repartir d’où vous venez. Je lui ai dit que je ne savais pas conduire ça. Oui ils nous ont demandé de repartir sur le même bateau. Mais j’ai dit que je ne peux pas. Ils sont allés s’entretenir avec leur cheffe. Un monsieur plus âgé que tout le monde, un peu costaud et c’était lui le plus violent. Qu’est-ce qu’ils font? Ils se sont arrangés à démarrer eux-mêmes le bateau et ont mis une première vague de personne dans ce bateau. [Ils étaient combien les policiers?] Deux en haut. En bas il y avait deux grands Ninja, le chef et une femme. Ils étaient au nombre de 7. Ils ont pris une première vague qu’ils ont conduit avec notre bateau. L’objectif était de les mettre sur leur bateau à eux. Nous pendant ce temps on était encore à l’ile. C’était l’un d’entre eux qui conduisait le bateau. Donc ce qui se passe c’est que pendant ce temps, moi j’avais mon téléphone et on nous avait donné le numéro d’une personne qui travaille dans une ONG, qui travaille au camp des réfugiés. J’ai sorti mon téléphone discrètement, j’ai écrit le message discrètement, sauf que la personne m’a dit qu’ils n’intervenaient uniquement en Turquie. Mais la personne a demandé la localisation et j’ai envoyé cela. Bref, j’ai essayé d’appeler le secours mais il était trop tard. J’ai recaché mon téléphone. Ils sont venus nous chercher pour la deuxième vague et une demoiselle c’est caché devant moi. Nous avons rejoint le bateau et la violence a recommencé. Quand nous sommes montés, la violence a recommencé. Il m’a donné des coups au niveau de la nuque, je pouvais succomber, je ne sais même pas comment j’ai pu résister à ça. Je suis celui qui a été le plus tabassé. Ils m’ont frappé avec une violence. Ils viennent encore et voulaient connaitre le nombre de personne qu’il y avait sur le bateau. Ils m’ont tabassé avec la matraque pour que je dise le nombre de personne exactement qu’il y avait sur le bateau mais je ne connaissais pas. On vient d’horizons diverses. Il y a peut-être une poignée de personne avec qui on a une certaine affinité mais ils m’ont tabassé. Ils ont récupéré un autre jeune homme, il était ghanéen. Ils m’ont demandé mon identité, ils ont récupérer un autre jeune homme et lui ont infligé la même dose de violence. Et l’ont tabassé. Et à tour de rôle. Je les ai vu prendre un enfant de 10 ans à peine et un costaud Ninja lui a donné des coups de genoux, des gifles car il avait un téléphone sur lui. Ils ont tabassé tout le monde, les femmes enceintes. Ils ont procédé à la fouille. Ils ont tout pris, les téléphones et aussi l’argent. Ils ont pris à une dame camerounaise qui avait pris le soin de caché l’argent dans ses parties intimes. Et sont partis retirer près de 1000 EUR. Cette dame a fait une interview quand on est venu nous chercher où elle répondait à un journaliste. Avec tous les problèmes au Cameroun, c’était ses économies, ils l’ont dépouillé. Ils ont continué à nous frapper et au bout d’un moment, ils nous ont isolés sur le bateau. Ils ont roulé en direction de la Turquie et puis ils ont roulé pendant 2 ou 3 heures, car ils faisaient des tours entre les aller et venu, on avait l’impression qu’ils fouillaient quelque chose ou quelqu’un. Ils ont trainé. Ils observaient et utilisaient les jumelles. Après ils nous ont pris et en direction avec nous ils sortent les paniers de sauvetages et après ils commencent à nous prendre avec une brutalité et nous jeter là, les enfants. Des coups de poings, je vous assure. Un mec parmi nous qui s’est cassé le bras. Il a subi une bastonnade. Ils l’ont tabassé alors qu’il avait le bras cassé. Une dame enceinte, ils n’ont même pas voulu regarder son état. Elle a eu le même traitement que tout le monde. [Ils étaient combien sur le bateau ?] Ils sont tous sur le bateau. Un seul est resté sur la montagne. 2 grand Ninjas, le patron un peu costaud, une dame et un jeune homme le plus jeune. Ils nous ont balancé aux environs de 14h. On tombe dans ces paniers et on est conduis par le vent et les vagues et heureusement pour nous il y avait quelqu’un parmi nous qui a réussi à bien caché son téléphone. Moi je suis venu avec un sac mais ils ont tout pris j’ai eu de la chance j’ai bien caché mon petit argent dans une poche intérieur d’un de mes sous-vêtements. Sinon Ils ont fouillé partout. Elle a sorti son téléphone et appelle le sauvetage. Une d’entre elle a pu se connecter, et envoyé la localisation et deux bateaux se sont approchés de nous avec des journalistes, des caméras et un autre bateau avec le sauvetage et nous nous dirigeons vers la gendarmerie et suivons toute la procédure. Mais cela a été une épreuve extrêmement difficile. A la suite de ce qu’on a entendu, le décès des deux passagers dans lequel nous étions tous ensemble, ça a choqué tout le monde. Parce-que quand on voit comme ça avec les enfants, c’est une horreur qu’on a vécu et je pense que ça a traumatisé tout le monde et le fait d’apprendre qu’il y a eu des décès, ça nous a traumatisé et marqué. [Et les personnes, les photos qui ont été envoyés vous avez réussi à les identifier?] Oui, surtout l’Ivoirien, vraiment ça me touche beaucoup car j’ai pu avoir un contact avec lui, j’ai discuté, c’est quelqu’un de très sympa, très posé qui ne demandait que de vivre et avoir un avenir. Les gens viennent juste pour trouver une meilleure vie quoi. Qu’il vient de perdre la vie alors qu’il ne cherche juste à s’en sortir je me dis que c’est inhumain ce traitement.

10. Témoignage d’AN Evènements du 15/9/2021

C’était le 14/9, on a quitté Izmir on s’est rendu dans un site en Grèce, à Samos. On est arrivé à 7h du matin. Dès qu’on a «posté » il y a les militaires grecs qui sont venus, ils ont fait des coups de battes, ils nous ont tabassés et puis ils nous sont retournés ici. On était au nombre de 33, et 3 sont entrés et 30 sont rentrés en Turquie. Les policiers étaient dans le bateau grec, ils se sont masqués, ils se sont bandés le visage et puis ils ont donné des coups de battes. Ils étaient beaucoup, ils étaient 6 dans le bateau. Et puis je crois 7 dans la forêt. Ils étaient beaucoup, ils appelaient en grec et en anglais. Mais on n’avait pas la possibilité «d’entendre» en anglais. Il y avait un bateau de pêcheur qui était à côté de nous. Il a appelé la police. Et la police est venue plus vite que le temps de monter. Il y a aussi des gens qui sont montés. Comme c’était vraiment une grande montagne, on essayait de monter et ils ont appelé la police, la police nous a fait descendre et nous a ramené. D’autres se sont cachés, ils sont rentrés dans la forêt et ils ont tous ramené ici.

Apres, ils nous ont fait monter dans les «dinghys» et puis après on nous fait monter dans les bateaux ou on nous fouillait et on nous tapait c’était vraiment… Quand on est monté dans les bateaux grecs là, ils nous ont fouillés, comme moi on m’a tapé, m’a ”poignardé” (coup de poing) dans le genoux, j’avais un bleu dans le genoux. On m’a déchiré les habits pour me fouiller. Si j’avais gardé l’argent. Ils nous mettaient vraiment le doigt dans le sexe. Ils portaient les gants et ils nous mettaient les doigts dans les sexes, ils cherchaient juste de l’argent. Il y avait beaucoup de femmes et d’enfants. Il y avait aussi une femme qui était déjà grosse (enceinte) et des qu’on est arrivé en Turquie elle a accouché, dans le bateau des turcs. [ils cherchaient dans les parties génitales de toutes les femmes ou juste certaines?] TOUTES les femmes, même les enfants. S’il y avait des enfants qui portaient des couches, ils leur enlevaient les couches pour voir s’il y avait de l’argent.

Ils cherchaient des téléphones, ils fouillaient. Moi je l’avais gardé dans ma doudoune. Quand le grec l’a vu il m’a tellement frappé que je ne bougeais plus il m’a blessé aux genoux et il a pris l’argent et le téléphone. Tout ce qu’on avait… J’avais un pantalon de survêtement et il a déchiré le pantalon pour mettre les doigts dans les parties génitales. Les hommes ils tapaient très fort par rapport aux femmes, vraiment les hommes ils tapaient les bras. Ils nous ont arrêté en Grèce, ils nous a emmenait près de la Turquie et ils nous ont jetédans l’eau. Ils regardaient vraiment autour s’il y avait personne et après ils nous ont jeté. C’était deux. D’abord c’était nous et après c’était les autres. Ils partaient très vite. Quand ils jettent ils partent très vite. C’étaient comme des sauvetages. C’est comme un panier ou une petite piscine pour faire jouer les enfants. On était au nombre de 14. Ils nous ont mis à l’intérieur et puis ils sont partis. Ils ont approché là-bas et ils ont jeté les autres qui étaient restés dans le bateau. La femme enceinte elle était avec nous, on était ensemble elle avait vraiment des douleurs. Une heure après, le bateau turc est venu. C’était 8 qui étaient partis. On était rentré au nombre de 27 je crois. On était de de différentes nationalités. Puis 2 jours après il y avait 3 camerounais qui sont rentrés et une fille congolaise qui est rentrée seule. Vraiment en fait je veux quitter mon pays pour l’assurance la sécurité, on croit qu’en Europe on va avoir la sécurité et l’assurance. Mais on est vraiment désolés. Depuis ce jour j’ai même peur, j’essaye même plus parce que je risque – c’était vraiment le risque entre la vie et la mort. On force même de traverser la mer… mais vraiment ils n’ont pas de cœur.

11. Témoignage de RM Evènements du 15/9/2021

J’étais avec ma famille, nous somme au nombre de 6. Moi ma femme, mes 3 enfants et la mère de ma femme. Il y avait des Camerounais, congolais, ivoirien et lorsque nous sommes débarqués vers 3h du matin, vers Samos. (…) On a roulé très bien, vers 7h moins de loin on a vu un petit bateau, une pirogue d’un pécheur. Il était en train de faire des manœuvres et on s’approchait vers Samos. Le bateau portait une seule personne, un vieux papa, le numéro du bateau c’était 802. Nous on était en train de chercher l’endroit où on va descendre, il venait vers nous et moi personnellement je l’ai vu téléphoner, pendant qu’il est au téléphone, en un clin d’œil on a un bateau grand qui arrive. Bateau 604 qui venait vers nous et on est arrivé à bord, d’autres gens sont tombés dans l’eau. Moi je suis tombé et j’ai reçu la corde du bateau et je l’ai ligoté vers une pierre et tout le monde était descendu. On a vu la grande barque en train de tirer des balles en l’air. Plus de 30 balles en l’air et les hommes qui étaient vêtu en bleu de nuit, noir, visage masqué. Sur le bateau, ce que j’ai vu, c’était des hommes en noir. Pendant qu’ils étaient sur le bateau, moi et ma femme je me suis caché sous une pierre et je voyais tout ce que ces gens faisaient, avec le petit bateau et pendant que je voyais, d’autres gardes sont aller vers la brousse, vers la montagne. Et soudainement j’ai vu un jeune garçon vêtu en bleu ciel, pantalon bleu, un peu militaire. Il a commencé à récolter les téléphones auprès de tout le monde, je l’ai ai remis un téléphone. Il avait un sachet. Après quelques secondes, tout le monde qui était enfui, tout le monde descendait vers la mer avec les militaires qui les accompagnaient. Une ou deux personnes en tenu tache tache. Ils ont demandé au petit bateau 804 de faire le trajet car le grand bateau ne peut pas aller jusqu’au bord. Le bateau 804 a pris la corde jusqu’au grand bateau. [Il y avait combien de policiers et militaires] Sur le grand bateau, 4 ou 5. Certains ont caché le visage d’autre non. Un jeune garçon n’était pas caché, il récolté les téléphones. Le pécheur a fait 2 tours, le premier avec les enfants et moi j’étais dans le deuxième. Après vous êtes menacé presque à mort. Moi personnellement on m’a battu. J’ai l’épaule droite cassé. J’ai une luxation à l’épaule. Parce qu’il battait vraiment presque à mort. C’est lorsque vous êtes entré sur le bateau leur mot c’était “bienvenu en Grèce” directement avec des coups, pieds, poings, matraques. Tout. C’était presque une bagarre, on n’avait pas le choix et après quelques minutes on a vu tous les militaires qui étaient en brousse sont revenus vers le grand bateau. Et là c’est le moment qu’on a commençait de fouiller les gens. Fouille et battre. Pour eux, ma blessure à l’épaule ce n’était pas une peine, d’autre avaient mal au cœur, l’autre est un peu costaud c’est lui qui nous fouillait, partout où tu peux garder de l’argent et après quand ils ont terminé de fouiller, même les petits enfants ont été tabassés. [Ils ont frappé les petits enfants aussi?] Oui. Ils ont frappé les enfants. Lorsqu’ils ont terminé, vers 8-9h, on nous a dirigés vers la Turquie, après quelques temps, ils commençaient à contrôler les militaires turcs, avec les jumelles. Ils ont vu que les militaires sont là donc ça ne va pas et nous devons changer. On a roulé roulé roulé et ils ont vu que c’était mieux. Ils nous ont mis dans les radeaux de sauvetages, dans les deux groupes. [Ils attendaient qu’il n’y ait plus de militaire turcs pour vous mettre à l’eau?] Oui. Ils ont vu qu’il n’y a pas de militaire, ils ont tenté 3 lieux. Ils ont vu qu’il n’y a pas de militaire Turcs et nous ont laissé dans les radeaux. (…) Quand nous sommes arrivés au port, moi je ne pouvais même pas marcher. Avec l’épaule je ne pouvais pas faire de mouvement. Ils m’ont mis sur l’ambulance, m’ont emmené à l’hôpital. Il y avait une femme aussi, une Camerounaise vraiment enceinte et quand je suis arrivé à l’hôpital à (NOM INAUDIBLE), à deux et après quelque temps la femme camerounaise a mis au monde. Moi on n’a pas pu remettre le bras, je suis parti dans un autre hôpital et là on a essayé de me traiter et après c’était fini, je suis retourné à la gendarmerie, rejoindre la famille, les autres. C’était difficile. Voilà ce qui s’est passé. (…) Pour l’apparence, c’était 2 types costauds, 1 dame. Presque tous étaient vêtu en tenu noire qui cachaient leur visage. 2 personnes en t-shirt bleu ciel avec le pantalon. Le jeune garçon et un militaire en tenu tache tache. Mais le jeune qui récoltait le téléphone, en bleu ciel, je peux l’identifier sur les photos. Le numéro du bateau c’était 604. La pirogue et le pêcheur était 804.

12. Témoignage de JN Evènements du 15/9/2021

On a quitté Izmir d’une ville à côté que je ne maîtrise pas. On est parti de là-bas avec des bateaux gonflables pour voyager pour Samos. C’était la nuit du 14 – 15 septembre vers 2am. Nous étions au nombre de 40 personnes. Il y avait 2 enfants dont le mien. Je ne me souviens plus exactement le nombre de femmes ou d’hommes. On est arrivé en Grèce à 6h au petit matin. Et une fois qu’on a accosté on est sorti du gonflable et là on a vu les bateaux grecs approcher en tirant de partout en criant avec un haut-parleur/ un microphone. Ils disaient/criaient stop, parce que les gens montaient grimper les collines pour partir. [Vous avez dit «ils tiraient’ »? Ils avaient des armes?] Oui oui ils tiraient partout. Ils étaient habillés en bleu marine et il y avait écrit police et il y avait le drapeau blanc et bleu très grand. Et je pense que c’était des policiers. J’étais avec ma petite fille Marie Madeleine, elle a presque 1 an, elle aura 1 an le 23 octobre. Ils ont tiré dans le désordre. L’enfant était perdue, elle me regardait et criait et pleurait elle était effrayée. Depuis je pense que mon enfant est traumatisé car le moindre petit bruit elle fuit et elle crie. On doit l’appeler doucement pour ne pas qu’elle pleure, ça m’a vraiment traumatisée. Quand j’ai commencé à filmer là ils ont tiraient même à côté de moi alors que je l’avais dans les bras. Le bruit était très fort et assourdissant. [Tu as la vidéo de ça?] J’ai juste filmé le bateau sur l’eau. La photo que je vous envoyée. Et ils criaient «no phone, no phone!». J’ai réussi à cacher le mien et à le garder car ils ont pris tous les téléphones. Nous sommes seulement 2 ou 3 personnes qui avons réussi à garde les téléphones. Nous étions descendus du gonflable. On avait commencé à grimper les collines. Il y avait 8 personnes qui ont réussi à grimper vite et se cachaient, les policiers ne les ont pas vu mais quand ils sont arrivés ils nous ont vu nous on n’était pas en haut et ils nous ont attrapé sur la terre ferme. Ils nous ont fait descendre et ils nous ont remis dans le gonflable. Ils nous ont traîné avec la corde du gonflable pour nous mettre vers leur navire. Il y avait un pêcheur qui les a aidés à trainer. Ils étaient très bruts. C’était comme des bêtes féroces, ils criaient, aboyaient, tapaient les gens. Ils avaient des matraques noires. Un petit geste ou faux pas et ils tapaient la personne donc nous on écoutait les ordres seulement. Ils nous ont regroupés vers 9am – et ils nous ont mis dans les radeaux de sauvetage pour nous laisser vers 13am dans les eaux turques. Le matin quand ils cherchaient les autres nous étions assis sur les pieds dans le bateau. [Tu peux me dire ce qui s’est passé entre 9 – 13 heures sur le gros bateau grec?] Ils nous ont fouillés. Ils nous ont demandé de nous asseoir. Tous ceux qui ont les téléphones à donner et ils ont ramené les sachets plastiques et ils nous ont demandé de les mettre dedans. Moi j’avais 2 téléphones j’avais bien caché un des deux et je leur ai donné celui avec lequel ma fille joue habituellement. Donc ils ont pris tous les téléphones et après ils ont commencé à taper sur les hommes. Il y a même un monsieur à qui ils ont cassé le bras, un congolais qui a été fracturé de l’épaule. Ensuite après les fouilles, ils ont commencé par les femmes. Ils ont mis leurs doigts dans les fesses des femmes. Vous vous rendez comptes? Dans les parties intimes et ils envoient les doigts pour chercher l’argent. Moi je pense que ce sont des voleurs. Il garde l’argent. Ma sœur qui est rentrée à Istanbul avait 650 euros sur elle et elle avait mis ça dans sa serviette hygiénique. Ils ont retiré ça. Ils ont envoyé les doigts et retiré ça. Ils y avaient des femmes qui avaient caché les téléphones dans les parties intimes et ils les ont fait sortir tout ça. Alors le monsieur qui prenait les téléphones. Il regardait les iPhones. Ils posaient à côté, ce qui n’a pas trop de valeur il jette dans l’eau et retire la Sim. Mais les bons téléphones ils les gardent eux. Pour les iPhones ils ne retirent même pas la Sim. Peut-être qu’ils le font chez eux. [Est-ce que les policiers ont fouillé les parties génitales de femmes devant les hommes?] Non non, ils appelaient personne par personne et partaient à l’arrière du bateau pour faire ça. Ce n’était pas un endroit fermé, donc je ne sais pas si les autres collègues voyaient. [Toi ils t’ont fouillé?] Oui mais moi j’avais l’enfant dont ils m’ont pas demandé d’enlever les habits. Mais par contre il m’a tâté/palper les parties intimes, pour voir si j’avais le téléphone. Mais je l’avais caché dans mes seins…mais ma sœur leur a mis le doigt dans les parties intimes et ils ont pris les 650 euros et elle a pleuré très fort, ils l’ont même appelé une deuxième fois pour la taper et dire qu’elle se calme car elle ne voulait pas se taire. Ils ont fouille 2 fois. Ce sont ce gens-là qui on apporté des gonflables c’est comme des pneus et là ils nous ont abandonné dans les eaux turques. On voyait bien leurs visages à eux les premiers. Il y en a même un qui s’appelait Christophe et un autre qui est très gros. [Question: donc tu pourrais identifier des visages?]. Oui il y a trois visages qui sont restés dans ma tête. Le gros, celui qui m’a fait descendre de la colline, il m’a mis deux grosses gifles car son collègue avait vu (celui qui avait le microphone et les jumelles) que je filmais alors il a envoyé le gros pour prendre mon téléphone (je l’avais caché dans mon slip). Le gros m’a mis deux belles gifles et il m’attirait les cheveux alors que je tenais mon bébé dans les bras. Ce même monsieur, le gros, a expliqué à un gars du Ghana pourquoi il faisait ça. Le voyageur ghanéen lui avait demandé en anglais pourquoi il était méchant et ils nous tapaient vous nous renvoyez etc., et le gros monsieur lui a répondu que c’est un problème politique je suis là juste pour faire mon travail. On pourrait vous laisser partir mais il y a un problème politique et on ne peut pas. Il y avait aussi un Dimitri avec Christophe. Ils nous ont poussés comme des ordures dans ces radeaux. 8 personnes avaient fui donc on était 32 personnes dans les radeaux. Il y a 4 qui sont allés au camp et 2 sont morts dans les radeaux (un ivoirien malvoyant, et un camerounais je peux vous envoyer la photo de son cercueil) et 2 sont arrivés en Turquie des jours après. Ils nous ont mis dans 2 radeaux. Il y avait même une femme enceinte et en travail. Car dès que nous sommes arrivés l’ambulance turque était en train de l’attendre, dès qu’on est arrivé elle accouche. Ce qui m’a le plus choqué c’est la façon dont les grecs traitent les humains. Car nous sommes humains. Nous voyageons dans notre pays… vous connaissez bien les problèmes de l’Afrique, nous voyageons pour de meilleures conditions de vie. Nous ne tuons pas, nous ne faisons de mal à personne. Même ici en Turquie, ils savent que les africains ne font pas de mal, ils ne nous contrôlent même pas quand ils font les fouilles. Nous sommes là, juste pour travailler, avoir notre argent et rechercher de meilleures conditions de vie. Et alors, en voyage, ils nous ont trouvé en route, ils nous tapent, ils nous tuent, ils nous traitent comme des moins que rien, comme des déchets. Et c’est ça qui m’a le plus choqué. Et même quand ils voient les enfants, un nouveau-né, ils triquent comme ça… ma fille n’a pas demandé à naître elle est dans mes bras. Ils n’ont même pas pitié de l’enfant, il la jette n’importe comment. Moi j’étais malade ce jour-là… je vomissais et ce sont mes sœurs qui m’ont aidée et elles ont porté mon bébé a un moment. Les policiers à un moment ont attrapé mon bébé n’importe comment pour le lancer dans le radeau et ils l’ont lancé comme une vieille chose qu’on jette n’importe comment, elle aurait même pu tomber ailleurs dans l’eau. Ils n’ont pas de cœur. Les grecs n’ont pas de cœur. Je ne sais pas si ce sont des humains ou ce sont des démons, je ne sais pas. Vous qui êtes la bas, je vous supplie de mener des actions pour que les grec ne nous renvoient plus. Tous les africains qui viennent en Turquie c’est pour aller en Europe, nous on ne veut pas rester ni en Grèce, c’est juste pour traverser. Donc si vous pouvez faire des actions fortes, pour que les gens ne soient plus méchants qu’ils ne nous accueillent normalement. Nous ne sommes pas violent, nous n’avons pas d’armes, nous sommes migrant et nous venons pour travailler. Si on travaille on amènera de la richesse aussi au pays qui nous accueille on va payer des impôts.

On était au maximum 30-35 personnes. On est arrivé en Grèce, et ils ne sont pas passés cinq minutes, peut-être dans trois ou quatre minutes, on a vu de gens habille en noir, des grecs qui ont tiré et crié qu’on arrête, qu’on rentre dans nôtres pays. Mais nous avons réussi a monté, a escalade vers la montagne mais ils sont venus et ils ont arrêtés certains gens avec des cris et tire des bals. Moi j’ai réussi de m’échapper dans la forêt. Ils ont été dans la mer et puis ils sont montés sur la montagne. Ils ont été dans un petit bateau et ils nous ont suivi jusqu’à dans la montagne. Ils étaient habillés en noir. Il y avait d’autres qui ont été en tenue collage [tache militaire]. Ils étaient en train de tirer, plusieurs fois même. Après ils ont arrêté les autres groupes. Nous nous sommes cachés. On m’avait arrêté mais j’ai réussi à m’échapper avec d’autres personnes. On a été à trois personnes. Je crois qu’ils ont arrêté cinq personnes comme ça. On est restés huit. On s’est séparés. Nous avons été un groupe de trois personnes. C’a été deux groupes avec une fille et deux garçons. J’ai été avec deux garçons, un Congolais et un Camerounais. Puis on a commencé à marcher. On n’a eu rien à manger ou rien à boire. Pendant trois jours on a marché, cherché quelqu’un qui puisse nous aider, pour prendre un taxi pour aller au camp. On a marché et puis on a été derrière l’église catholique et moi je ne me suis pas senti bien. Quand je suis arrivé à l’église catholique, je ne me suis pas senti bien. Les autres deux ils ont voulu monté dans un taxi mais moi j’ai dit je ne peux pas, je n’arrive pas à marcher, je suis resté à l’église catholique. Ma santé ne me permettais pas d’aller jusqu’au taxi. Quand je suis arrivé à l’église catholique j’y ai trouvé un monsieur, un garde comme ça; c’est celui qui a appelé le gens de la police qui m’ont attrapé. Ce sont eux qui m’ont plié, ils m’ont pris l’argent, ils m’ont enlevé le pantalon pour voir si j’ai l’argent, j’ai quelque chose. C’est comme si nous sommes des criminels. Moi je ne comprends pas cette histoire. [Ils ont fait ça où?] Derrière l’église catholique. Il y a derrière l’église une sorte de ferme, là ils l’ont fait. Ils m’ont pris 200 euros, aussi ils m’ont pris le téléphone. Ils m’ont mis dans une voiture, la tête en bas, pour que je ne puisse voir quoi, la route? Ils m’ont mis après dans un bateau gonflable. Nous sommes arrivés jusqu’au milieu, près de la Turquie. Ils m’ont laissé là-bas et puis ils sont partis. J’ai été la seule dans le bateau. Les deux garçons qui ont été avec moi ils ont réussi d’arriver jusqu’au camp. Je crois qu’ils ont pris un taxi jusqu’au camp. J’ai été trouvé par la police turque. Il y avait des bateaux avec des touristes et des bateaux des pêcheurs qui ont passé et ils ont appelé la police. Ce qui m’a le plus choqué c’a été le mauvais traitement. Nous les Africains nous sommes toujours mal traités. Mais moi je n’ai pas choisi à être africaine. La façon dont ils nous traitent, non, je n’arrive pas le comprendre. Je n’arrive pas à le définir. Et ils ont jeté deux personnes à la mer qui sont morts parce qu’ils ne savaient pas nager.

15. Testimony by IO Events of 15/9/2021

On Tuesday 14/09/2021 evening around 7:00 p.m. 36 persons in Turkey we left in a grey minibus towards the island of Samos in Greece. We all boarded a boat, and on Wednesday 15/09/2021 morning around 6:00 a.m. we arrived in Samos Island. There, the Greek soldiers, after firing warning shots on the air, arrested 28 people, while 8 people escaped, including myself. After we escaped, we were first divided into 2 groups: 3 + 5 persons. I was in the group of 5 persons with Samuel YUSUF, Ali YAYA and 2 Congolese men (these 2 Congolese men are now in the Samos camp). On Thursday 16/09/2021 afternoon our group of 5 was walking on the forest road, but we divided. The 2 Congolese men advanced and the 3 of us were walking behind. 2 armed men of the Greek army (wearing black uniform), who were driving a car, arrested the 3 of us. They put us in the car and took us to a marina. At the marina, 2 men of the Greek Coast Guard (wearing black uniform) put us 3 on a boat, told us not to look up and punched us. The boat left with these 5 persons on board and stopped after a 20-30-minute high-speed trip. From the front of the boat, the 2 coast guards threw into the sea first Ali YAYA, then Samuel YUSUF, and then me (after having beaten me because I tried to hang on to the boat). After falling into the sea, I saw my two friends jiggle. After rising to the surface of the water in shock, I swam to land. After getting ashore, Ι vomited, pissed, and lay down. After regaining consciousness, I looked towards the sea and saw Samuel YUSUF still motionless on the water. The waves brought him to land and after he approached I pulled him and took him ashore. In the hope that he could recover, I massaged him but he didn’t react at all and I realized he was dead. In order for someone to find us on the beach, I found two rods and after I tied them with a rag, I nailed them to the beach. I left Samuel YUSUF on the beach and walked along a path, and after getting tired I slept until the morning in the forest. On Friday 17/09/2021 after waking up, I realized I couldn’t go anywhere and returned to the beach. On my way to the beach, I hoped to see someone. I saw a building and went to it. It was abandoned. I looked for water but couldn’t find any. After leaving the building, one gendarme (man) located me, put me in the car, and took me to the station. In the station they gave me water and I lay down because I was not feeling well. Later, with the help of an interpreter (man), I told them in French that my friend Samuel YUSUF was dead on the beach. Then they took me to the hospital, where I slept that night. On Saturday 18/09/2021 I was transferred from the hospital to the prison. On Sunday 19/09/2021 I was released and I took the bus to Izmir. I first identified the body of Samuel YUSUF in a building like hospital, where I was accompanied by a gendarme, and then I identified the body of Ali YAYA in another building like hospital, where I was accompanied by a friend of Ali YAYA and a lawyer (man). This night I slept in a hotel. On Monday 20/09/2021, this lawyer accompanied me to testify at the Coast Guard. I am still very sad and have not fully recovered from the shock of these two deaths.

16-20. Expulsions from Samos on 18 September 2021 (5 interviews of 4 persons)

1. Testimony by FK Events of 18/9/2021

We were 27 in number when we landed on the Megalo beach on 18 September, we climbed up the mountain and we called for help. We called Aegean Boat Report and called people to help us, but there was no escort at that time. After an hour, the coast guard came with some soldiers to come and look for us in the mountain. They caught us and beat us, they took our phones, our money, and they even used their hands to find money in our private parts. When we landed we separated. We were nineteen in number in my group. There were two groups – the military group wore their military uniform. The coast guard wore blue and black and put on masks so you could not see their face. They found us in the mountains around six in the evening. They kept us in a secret house in the mountains. They took our money and our phones. They put their hands in our private parts – all of the women – the coast guard put their hands in our private parts to look for money in the house in the mountains. No one could see them. In the evening, they took us back at night. They brought us to a beach area and put us in the boats. The big boat is in the sea, so they took us in the smaller boats while our big boat was waiting in deep water. They transferred us into our boats. First they put us in a small boat, the big boat was in the water waiting for us. They put us in the big, red coast guard boats. They took us to the middle of the sea and put us in our boats for Turkey around 7:30 they took us from the mountain to the water, but at that time we didn’t have our phones so I don’t know the exact time. It was already dark. And then they pushed us back. They put us in the boat that we used to move to Greece. That boat was already broken. Only God saved our life that day because that boat was already spoiled and already sank. They put us in that boat to leave us. Every one of our colleagues that went together, they beat this little boy who was sixteen years of age. They beat him and cuffed him and used their machine to cut the handcuff and now he has problems, this boy from Gambia. They beat him and he was very sick at that moment. They beat him totally. That was no good. You have to do something about this. We have the right to seek refuge. This is no good. You have to put an end to this. Imagine, if an African does that to their wife, they would kill that person. Imagine if they put their hands in our private parts – our vagina – just to look for what? How can someone put money inside their vagina? They put their hands in there saying they were searching for money… but if an African man did that to their wife, they would kill that person. It is totally unfair. It is no good.

2. Testimony by FK Events of 18/9/2021 – second interview to Institut d’Etudes Politiques (Paris)

I left in February for Iran because I was not safe in my country Sierra Leone. I didn’t even know where I was going. People helped me, I stayed in a hotel for a very long time, and my visa expired. They caught me and I stayed in jail for a long time. I didn’t want to go back to Sierra Leone, anywhere but Sierra Leone. They wanted to deport us, before we signed the deportation papers we fled. We kept going and going. I didn’t know where we were going, I just went. On 18 September, we got on the boat. I didn’t even know I was in Greece. We were 27.

I cried because I thought I was coming to die. They did horrible things to us. They checked all our private parts thinking they were looking for money within our private parts. I never knew how to swim; I had never seen a boat before. The boat broke and we didn’t land, only God helped us. I never swam in my life. I had never sat in a boat. It was my first experience that day. I just pray because I am a Christian. I am a Christ believer. I pray, I pray. I didn’t even sit; I didn’t put my buttocks on the ground. I was just thinking when I am going to reach. I said this boat is not safe for me and before we landed the boat broke, we did not even land and the boat spoiled. Only God helped us to land that day. It’s not easy for me. I never swim. I don’t know how to swim in my life.In this boat, some people said we were for 7 hours, some said close to 7 hours, but I think it was 7 hours. 7 hours that we were in the boat and the boat spoiled. I had my phone with me and before we entered the boat, they said we should buy biscuit, water, bread, so we everything was inside. In the night we enter a balloon boat. He said this time it’s not far, it’s 1hr and 30 minutes. Then later we sit there for seven hours. Before we reached it was not working but we managed to turn it on and off until we reached. When we reached everybody ran in the mountains, they said we were going to hide up in the mountains. We started going up in the mountain. Everybody ran in the mountain, because that mountain is very high so we ran, we ran, they said that we should not stop. We climbed the mountain, we climbed, and we climbed. So, they said that we hide because now we should hide and call the UN to help us. So, we hid in the mountain. We stayed there because we landed at 6 o’clock in the morning. We were in that mountain until 5 o’clock in the evening. We called, we called for help we called the UN, the UNHCR, many people. We separated, everyone separated. I went with some Africans, 9 persons. But we were 10 that got out together, but there was one man that was not able to walk so we left him behind. 9 of us managed to climb up. We were 9. So, we were up in the mountain, and we sat there for long after so many hours we hear they were beating that man who was not able to walk, and the man have pain. So, we hear they are beating the man, we hear the voice, the sound, and the beating. We said ahh this man, they are beating him now. We thought maybe they were going to catch us. We said we should hide, and we should wait, we should not move again, we should wait until night. We said okay, we sat, and the coast guard was rounding the place to look for us and they finally caught us. They catch us and they took us down because they have a house in that bush, so they took us down. So, after they catch us, they took us to their house in the bush, because they have a house in their bush. They collected all our bags. They started to search our bag one after the other. Searching for phones, for money, for everything. So, after that they called one by one to search us. Just imagine, I wear three tights and one jean trouser. They removed that all. They put their hand inside my private, saying that they are looking for something. They searched us thoroughly. Whenever I imagine that I think different, it’s because can you imagine, you as a man you use one hand glove to search all the women with that same hand glove. The man put his finger as if I am his girlfriend or I am his wife. The search men are there, men sit down and look when they call the women to search. They remove my trousers and the man put his hand inside my privates to look for. He said that they are looking for money, so they searched us. After that, later we were in that operation, and we heard a voice down the seaside. We heard a man talk to the coast guy. Because there are two coast guys that wear black, black and two coast guards that wear combat uniforms. There are two coastguards and two military guys. So, after the two military guys helped them to find us and after they find us, they give us to the two coast guard guys. The people that wear the black, black with face masks. After that the two military guys they go. They spoke Greek language, so we don’t understand. And before the man go down, he said that we should all sit down, for the men not to see us. So, we sit down. So, after that we stayed there for very long hours. At night they put us down, down the sea area. We met people, we talked to the people, but we didn’t understand what they were talking about. Me I only here “Ella, Ella, Ella,” I don’t know what is Ella. So, when we go down, they put us in a small boat. We thought that they were going to take us to the quarantine. They took us into the bus and they check us again using their hands too. I said ah what kind of people is this? They put their hands in our private parts saying that they are looking for money. So they put us down, we stayed there. That boat stayed there for a long time because they went to catch the remaining people. We were scattered so they wanted to put us all together. When they put us all together our own boat was waiting for us in the water. So they went with us to the Turkish water, they put it in our boat. That boat was already spoiled. So they put us there and only god, only god saved me because they did not see my phone. This is the phone I used to call because they asked me if I had the phone and told me give me the phone, I’ll call Turkish number. So I gave them the phone. I said after they push us back what is going to happen next? They said don’t worry they will come and take us to Turkey. So when they push us back that was when I knew Turkey and Greece. Because before that, I never knew where I was going. I was just going. So they left us in the water and they go. So the boat sink… only God saved us, everyone was praying. That one was calling Jesus, the other one was calling ‘La illah illa Allah Muhammad rasool Allah.’ Everyone was praying in their own religion. We were more than 20 when they pushed us back. It was the same boat. People have left their bags so when they put us back some people found their bags again. That boat was broken, and they knew it! It was at night. The place was dark and at that time the water was very rough. We stayed for a very long time. A very long time we were in the water. And I was just asking where are these people who said they were going to save us? We waited for a very long time and in Turkey they said we should send them our location. So we sent them the location of where they dropped us and it took a very long time for Turkey’s people to come and rescue us. When we arrived in Turkey, they collected us and they put us in their big boats. So they took us to a very big place. It was very late so we slept in the sea area in Turkey and in the morning they took us to a very big house. They gave us food, and they did COVID tests. We slept there for one or two days and the next day they took us to our final place to give us our paper and they left us.

3. Testimony by IM Events of 18/9/2021

We left Turkey on 17 September from Cesme around 11pm. We arrived in Greece in 7 hours. I don’t know how you call the place that we landed, but I know it was Samos. I don’t know how you call the beach. After we landed on Samos, we were 27 on the boat so we ran towards the island, we tried to contact some organization to rescue us but none of them were responding. Just the man who linked you with me [Panayote Dimitras]. He was the only one who responded to us so he asked us some basic questions and we answered and he asked us to send our names and details. By then, we were only 9 because we split into different groups. We were only 9, so we sent him all of our information. The other people were also communicating with him, so he posted in a Greek newspaper and said they would come and rescue us. We were chatting with him. Around 5 o’clock, we saw some armed men, some uniformed men – they were wearing combats and wearing masks on their faces and carrying weapons. They came to meet us where we were sitting and asked us to come down. We went down to the beach and they held us hostage. By then I was still communicating with the man. I told him that these armed men arrested us and took us into custody. They shouted at us, they took everything from us. They took our money, everything. They beat the boys. They beat some of the boys. And for us, the women, they stripped us naked and shouted at us, they removed everything from our hand. Then that night at around 9 o’clock they took us to a big boat and took us to Turkey water and then put us in this life raft and left us there. Six of them were wearing combat uniforms. They were soldiers, six of them. Two of them were wearing black. And the top for the Greek Coast Guard uniform, they were not wearing the top. They were wearing a black top, but the top they were wearing had the badge on it the [inaudible] coast guard. And they were wearing masks on their faces so we could not recognize the faces. They did not introduce themselves to us. When they came, they were very aggressive, so we did not even bother to ask them because we were very scared of them. All of them had weapons, especially the soldiers. They all had weapons. And these two coast guards, I know they were coast guards based on their black coat that they were wearing – they were carrying pistols. A small gun. We were very afraid. They did not introduce themselves to us and we did not bother to ask them because we were afraid. They beat only the men with hands and feet. They didn’t hit them with any weapons, just hands and feet. They found us around five in the evening. They took us down to the beach where we landed. We were there until night, until 9 o’clock. At that time, they put us in one big boat. I could not recognize the boat, but the boat’s paint was orange. They put us in the boat, took us to Turkey water and then put us in some life raft. All of us in one raft, they put all of us there. They captured all of us who were in the boat – 27 of us. They took us to those boats and handcuffed all of us, men, women, all of us they handcuffed us. When they wanted to put us into the smaller boat they took off the handcuffs. They put us into the lifeboat by then I called – I was able to keep my phone, at the time they were shouting, I was able to hide my phone – so I used my phone to call the Turkish coast guard to come and rescue us. I want to say, just [inaudible] the way they treat us. They took away everything. The experience was so horrific. It was so scary. Even when we told them that they already posted us, that the Greek government knew about our presence in that place, they did not listen to us. They were beating the men, even one of our boys. He was sick even before they beat him. They took everything from us. Our money, phone, everything they took from us. I am telling you about one of the boys he is currently complaining about pain all over the body because of the beating they gave him.

4. Testimony by AK Events of 18/9/2021

[How did you go to from Sierra Leone to Izmir] There are humans Africans, these guys are doing these things, they go to our country and lie to us. They tell us that they will take us to Europe and let us go to school there and finish our education because I was reaching for my university. So they lie to me and tell me that with such an amount of money I will come to Europe and continue my school and have a good job. They lie to me. When I gave them the money they took me to Iran. And they let me stay in Iran, so I found a way to come to Turkey. You know I have no one here, I am struggling by myself that’s why I want to find my way to Europe. I tried to go from Turkey to Germany and not Turkey to Greece. We uses boats, it was 18th September. But it was not my first time. I went once before that time (4 July I entered Chios and they pushed me back). On 18 September I was in Samos, I entered Samos. I think we were 26 or 27 people. We left at night, 11pm or 12am – and we reached Samos in the morning by 6am/7am. When we saw the town the boat stopped from the water so we managed to go to a remote place. There was nobody there (only for tourists, it’s very high and there are lots of bushes). So we tried to land there and we tried to hide, we stayed there for a couple of hours and tried to hide, up to the mountain. And then those people come. They tried to catch us, they beat us, and they went up to the mountains to find us. These people had masks (black) and wore combat uniforms. They caught some of my colleagues and after they found the others. They caught us very early in the morning. Greek People for sure (I can understand some Greek language for example they used to say “ela” and some other words that I can recognize), so I got that. The last time it was the same people. They spoke the same language and they spoke Greek, so they are Greek people. They are military, they came to take us and they to hand over us to the coast guard. I can remember the boat number, it was AS607. It’s very hard to speak about that. After they caught us, they beat us and they handcuffed me (he shows the marks he has on his arm from the violent event) and they hit me as if I was not a human being. On our sisters they put their hands on their vaginas and take money. They say they are finding money but I don’t know if they wanted sex abuses or what…They used bad bad things to search these ladies (phone or money) and us the men they beat us. Some of the ladies get hit as well even though they beat one man with one foot. The place they caught us, they started hitting us there. But there was a beach there and they were people and we were on top of the bush. They forced us to go down, beat us and put us in boats because they didn’t want people to see what happened and what they were doing. Even one man asked them what they are doing: They say they are doing operations. They tell us not to speak, if anyone speaks they would beat him and kill him there. That is how they treat us so nobody speaks and nobody stands up. They keep us there for a couple of hours, until the place starts to be dark, people are gone, they bring us to the coast guard, to whom they handed us over. From the coast guards they did not beat us in the boat. They took us to another boat and from this boat it took us to our own boat that we entered Greece with. And that boat was almost finished they just put us there and left there. I can recognize them. I know 2 of those faces. One is a very fat man with a big stomach. His face is round. He is not very tall, medium I’d say. And I saw him twice – he pushed me back twice, once in Chios and once in Samos. They took everything, almost everything. They took all phones. From me they took 60 euros, my phone, everything. 7pm to11pm they pushed us back. They used the boat we took to go to Samos and put us inside and left us. One of my friends managed to keep his phone and he called Turkey and Turkey rescued us. They put 23 in this boat and the day after they pushed back the remaining 4. No-one succeeded in this journey. The boat was very bad. [In Chios they did the same?] In Chios it was even worse. I don’t know how to call it maybe a “suicide journey” because they tried to stop us in the sea on 4 July (check through Aegean Boat report, you will see the whole story) and tried to kill us (21 people – 11 people managed to succeed, my brother is there). There was a 9-day old baby. They beat the baby and the mama and they pushed that baby back.

5. Testimony by ES Events of 18/9/2021

First of all I was in Iran. I was inside a car because I was transported in a car so I don’t know if I’m in Turkey that time, so after that I just see myself in the sea. After that, they put me in a boat. So when we landed they told us you are in Greece. When they pushed us back from Greece then I know I am in Turkey now. From Iran they transport us at night. So that night I just see myself in the sea. Some group of people they say to us we are going to another country. But I didn’t know that time I am in Turkey. So when I reached Greece then I know we are in Yunanistan. In Greece we ran and hid in a bush. We called for people to help. They said they will come and help us. We stayed there for a couple of hours in Greece. He hid in something like a bush. Yes I know the date, 18 September. I remember everything. We left by night. We boarded the boat at something like 12 o’clock. And we reached Greece at 7 o’clock. How many people were on the boat? 27. We went on something like a mountain. We landed at the beach. There is something like a tree house in the beach. It was in Samos, the name of the beach is Megalo Seitani. When we arrived at the beach we ran for our lives because we didn’t want people to see us so they cannot push us back. So we ran. We climbed up on the mountain. We landed at 6 or 7 am. Nobody was there. We ran into the bush. We climbed up the mountain. We waited there for a couple of hours. We called for people to rescue us. Then the soldiers came for us. We waited here and we just saw the soldiers. They are very well armed. They shouted at us and they told us to stop. They warned us that they will shoot us. It was something like 4 to 5 pm. They were 5 in number all of them soldiers. There were two people who were at the push back. The color of their uniform is Blue Black. They are the people that push us back. After that the military man caught us. They didn’t catch us all. There were 19 in number. We split in groups. When you run for your life you split in groups. So our own group they catch us around 4 or 5 pm, some 10 of us. After that they captured Somali people. They put us together. When they put us together it was 19 of us. They used violence against us. When the military men caught us they handed us to the Greek coast guard. Two of them. The military men went. So the two coast guards that had warned us, beat us and slapped us, they took our money and our phones. And even they put their hands, their fingers in the women’s’ vaginas. Only the coast guards. This is wrong, to put their hands in the women’s vaginas, all of them. We feel offended. You see? It is so pathetic you see? I don’t like to explain this. When I remember that I just repeat it. We leave our country for a reason, and they do this thing to us. It is unfair it is wrong. The Greek people should know we are human beings. We are not animals. They treat us like animals. They even beat us, they took everything in our hands, everything, our money, everything. The Greek coast guard they don’t have humanity. I remember even the Greek coast guard, even the Greek people before, they were refugees, remember the time of 1940, 1920 the Greek people, they were refugees in wars. When they were refugees some went to Syria some went to Egypt. I don’t know if you recall in the history, in the immediate history, you know the Greek people were refugees. They came to another country for persecution or for war. They put us in something like a house. We were on the outside. The color of the house is white and blue. There was a Greek flag in the house, in the mountain, in Megalo [Seitani] beach. They put us in that house and said they would let us sleep at night. Then they slapped us and beat us. They took everything from us. After that in the evening, 7 pm, at that time they transported us to push us back in our boat. They put us in something like small boats to transport us in a red boat. The Greek coast guard boat. Small boats. After that, they transported us on the same boat where we were when we landed. After that they took us in the middle of the sea. In a broken boat. The water was getting inside it. The boat was already broken. They were not sympathetic when they pushed us back. They just pushed you. They didn’t care. This was night. F was the only one that managed to keep her phone and managed to contact Turkey. I’m in Turkey now. Since they pushed us back, that time I knew I am in Turkey. This is so pathetic. You know our countries, you know Africa, we ran away from prosecution, some people ran away from war. Push back is bad… It is unfair… We are all humans. This is racist. I remember the time they beat us … they took our money. It is unfair. They treat us like we are criminals. We are not criminals. We go to their country to help us. It’s unfair.

1. Témoignage de JK Evènements du 21/9/2021

J’étais à Izmir, avant tout, là j’ai reçu un appel pour aller où on devrait aller pour monter en voiture. Nous sommes partis, on a pris un train de la gare de Basmane (à Izmir) jusqu’à Kusadasi. Il y avait des femmes, trois camerounaises, deux congolaises (5 femmes), dont deux qui étaient enceintes, et neuf hommes adultes. Moi j’étais le seul mineur, donc au départ nous étions au nombre de 15. Après on a commencé à avancer pour trouver le passeur (les gens qui devaient nous mettre dans l’eau) et puis on a trouvé deux hommes (ils étaient d’origine afghane) et il y avait une autre femme, aussi blanc (avec un bébé). On était 18 personnes et un bébé. Vers 21 heures on est parti de Kusadasi. Après quand nous avons commencé à avancer, le passeur est venu me parler, vu que je comprenais un peu, c’était sur l’ile de Samos où on devrait accoster. (On a essayé de voir ça de loin). Puis nous sommes montés avec le chauffeur au bord du dinghy. On a commencé à avancer, on a avancé pendant plus de deux heures (on était presque sur terre). De loin nous avons vu un bateau grec, qui suivait le mouvement que nous on était en train de faire. J’ai dit au chauffeur de couper le moteur (pour voir s’ils nous suivaient ou pas). Du coup il a coupé le moteur (le bateau grec a aussi a coupé le moteur). En quelques minutes on devrait accoster. Derrière nous il y a eu deuxième bateau grec qui est passé, il est venu pour nous couper le chemin. Après il y eu un troisième bateau, qui s’est approché. Il y avait une jeune fille et une personne (je suis sûr que c’était le commandeur), un militaire qui avait un gros ventre, habillé en tenue bleue avec un signe grec. Quand il est venu il a commencé à nous dire déjà de ne pas parler et de rester tranquille. Ils se sont approchés tout près de nous, ils ont commencé à nous faire monter dans leur bateau. Ils nous ont superposé (ils te jettent dans le bateau, donc quand tu montes il y a une autre personne qui te monte dessus et ainsi de suite). Après ils nous ont séparé en deux groupes, nous on est parti devant, les autres sont restés derrière. La première des choses qu’ils nous ont demandé « qui a appelé le Aegean Boat Report ?», il (le « commandeur ») a commencé à nous frapper avec un fouet, il nous a chicoté. D’abord il nous demandé qui parlait anglais. Personne n’a parlé et ils ont commencé à nous fouiller. Ils ont pris les téléphones de presque tout le monde, sauf le mien (bien sûr) et un camerounais aussi a réussi à garder son téléphone. Ils ont aussi pris des montres. Ils nous ont mis par terre, les pieds croisés, les mains à l’air, la tête en bas (on n’avait pas le droit de regarder). La fille (qui n’avait pas de visage couvert) est venue avec un sachet pour mettre tous les téléphones, l’argent et les montres. Ils ont toujours dit « malaka, malaka down down » pour qu’on ne lève pas la tête. On a commencé à naviguer, on a navigué pendant des heures. Ils nous ont laissé vers le petit matin. Quand ils nous ont laissé, j’ai essayé d’appeler pour une première fois 158, les gardes côtes turcs nous ont demandé la localisation, ils sont venus. Les gardes côtes turcs ont pris des photos, ils nous ont mis dans leur bateau. Nous sommes rentrés jusqu’au port de Kusadasi.

2. Témoignage de DM Evènements du 21/9/2021

C’était le 20 septembre 2021. Le point de départ a été à Kusadasi (en Turquie). On était 18 personnes dans le bateau (15 noirs, deux afghans qui étaient avec une femme), parmi 6 femmes, dont deux qui étaient enceintes et une avec un bébé (la femme qui était avec les deux afghans). On est parti vers 20 heures dans la direction de la Grèce. On a fait presque une heure et 15 minutes dans le bateau, ensuite les gardes côtes grecs se sont approchés (plusieurs officiers sur un grand bateau). Nous étions encore à environ quarante minutes de Samos. Ils nous ont pris tout, c’est à dire les téléphones et l’argent. Ensuite les gardes côtes grecs nous (aussi les femmes) battaient avec des bâtons et des armes. Ils nous insultaient, en répétant « malaka, malaka » et « il ne faut pas venir ici ». J’étais très stressé. On est resté sur le bateau jusqu’à environ 4 heures du matin. Ils nous ont jeté dans l’eau, avec des radeaux de sauvetage. Après à peu près 10-15 minutes dans l’eau, un bateau de la garde cote turque est venu nous prendre. On a fait un trajet de presque une nuit et un jour. Ils nous ont amené á un cachot (prison). Je n’ai aucune idée ou c’était, on n’a pas reçu des informations sur l’endroit où on s’est retrouvé, ou combien de temps nous devrons y rester. Après trois jours là-bas nous étions libérés et je suis retourné à Izmir.

23-24. Expulsions from Ikaria on 17 October 2021 (2 interviews)

1. Testimony by FK Events of 17/10/2021

Our trip was like this. It was at night. We went together to the seaside, I don’t remember the place in Turkey from where we left. We waited on the seaside and the boat came. They put us in a boat that was already prepared. We sat in the boat and we drove almost 8 hours from the seaside in Turkey to Greece, to Kirikos [Ikaria]. When we reached Greece, it was almost 8:30 in the morning. We got the boat out of the water and everyone tried to run. After this I myself I got a phone and started taking pictures of the people who came in the boat. I sent them with a message to the Aegean Boat Report and to the lawyer [he means Panayote Dimitras] as well for rescue. As I am sending I see the internet was weak so I went up the mountain to send the message. As I was doing that, two policemen came and they said: “don’t run, don’t run; we are trying to help you.” There was one man from Guinea. He was recently operated on his back and he was feeling pain and could not run. Another lady was feeling weak. And my wife who is 5-months pregnant had difficulty running. The policeman said they will take certain people to the hospital and the rest had to walk to the seaside. They brought a car and they put them in the car and drove around. Instead of taking them to the hospital they drove them around. The car with my wife and the others came also to the seaside. I asked my wife if they took them to the hospital and she said that they were driving around and talking on the phone. When I tried to ask one of the officers why they did not take them to the hospital and what they will do, he told me “sit down, we are taking you to Samos camp”. While we were there and the police was with us, some locals from the island came to see us. They brought things for us food, water, baby clothes, milk, diapers, even cooked food; they gave us everything we needed. This was very helpful for us because they gave us a lot of things. Everyone gave whatever they had just to help us. We waited there for almost two hours for the boat to come that was supposed to take us to Samos. Then the boat which came had the number “ΛΣ-1058 ΛΙΜΕΝΙΚΟ ΣΩΜΑ HELLENIC COAST GUARD”. Then we sit in that boat and they asked us to put the food and the things which were given to us by the locals on the boat. The locals were watching us as we were leaving with the boat. They drove us heading to Samos we were told. The villagers were still looking and once we went far enough in the sea and the locals could not see us anymore the police on the boat started beating us. This boat which took us from Kirikos after having lied to us that we are going to Samos camp they started beating us. I recognized the man who was before on the coast who had the letters NN and Z on his shirt. They started beating us and then they ate in front of us the food that was given to us by the locals. After that, we reached another big Greek ship. They spoke among themselves in Greek, they put their masks on, and they moved us from the boat no.1058 to the big ship. But the way they did it was horrible. They pulled us and grabbed us violently, even the children, the baby; from the hand or the leg to bring us on the big ship, we felt that we will be torn apart, they were so violent and insensitive to our pain. [How many officers were on the big boat?] Around 6 or 7 officers. After that they took everything given to us by the locals. Clothes for children, milk, diapers, foods, water, everything, everything. Then on the big ship they beat us again. On the big ship, they were searching for money and our phones. But what is the most disgusting was that they checked all the men in their anus with only one glove if they hid money and they beat them even more when they could not find anything. I was wearing my rosary with a cross on my neck because I am Catholic, and they just pulled it and threw it in the sea. I can’t understand how people can throw a rosary in the water. They found and they took all the money I had, almost 500 euros, that was all my savings. They took my phone and that of my wife. This is a new phone I am talking to. They looked at the phone and then they throw it in the water. For the ladies, they checked their private parts, using the same glove for all women. The same man who used his hand to check men’s anus for money he also used one glove to check the private parts of all women. They forced the women to undress in front of everyone and he checked each one in the breasts and private parts. They did that to everyone. I cannot understand why they re doing this. They undressed my wife in front of everyone, they told her to open her legs wide; they did that in front of all our acquaintances, people who knew us. They looked for money. After when they did not find money they slapped the women and kicked the men. But even when they found money they kicked you and beat you. I don’t know what they wanted from us. [Among the officers on the big boat, was there any woman who at least could have searched the women?] There was one woman dressed like a Muslim. Her face was covered. She was inside next to the person on the steering wheel. She was wearing a vail. Her face was not covered. They took expensive phones and threw the old cheap phones in the sea. For example, iPhones, Huawei or Samsung they kept them. They also took our passports and bank cards. Yes, the officers who tortured us removed their face mask and I saw their faces, so I can recognize them. After this finished we turned around for about 4 hours and then they inflated one raft and we all went into the water. They pushed us all in that one raft without any life jackets. We had no phone to call the other side to come and get us. Past an hour, we saw a boat far away and tried to make signs for them to come and rescue us. After an hour, a Turkish boat came and rescued us. We were taken to the prison for foreigners and stayed there for the night [How many people were on the boat with which you left Izmir?] 22 in total, 3 children 2 babies and the rest were adults. When we went with that boat to Ikaria, the police was not there, they came after. We got off the boat and we just ran up and one local saw us and he approached and tried to talk to us. We stopped further up and then some locals came and gave us things. The police were with the locals pretending to be nice with us. [How many policemen were there?] At first, they were three and then came two more. They told that they were going to take us to Samos. They lied to us so that we go with them. They told us to go to the harbor and wait there for them so they will take us to a hotspot. They only put in a car some people who could not walk. [Do you remember how many policemen or coastguards were in the first boat you got in? How they were dressed?] They were wearing blue uniforms. 5-6 I think. Some were taking off their face masks and we could see their faces, especially when they were eating the cooked food given to us by the locals. They beat us in both boats but the search for money and telephones happened in the second boat. In the second, the big boat, they were more aggressive when they hit us, especially when they did not find money.

2. Testimony by AA Events of 17/10/2021

I got to Greece on 17 October 2021. We got to Greece in a motor at about 22:00 23:00 pm, we arrived at Greece at Kirikus around 5 or 6 AM, we went walking for like 1KM distance long in a mountainous area with a load of stuff on us. We also sent photos to the institutions to ask for help, to “Asian Boat Report” [meaning Aegean Boat Report]. After we sent them our pictures, the Greek police caught us, and took our cellphones away from us. In this exact moment we sent the institution a message reporting that the police arrested us, so they knew about it. The police took us back to the coast, claiming that they are taking us the Samos camp, but it turned out they were lying. The Greek people saw us going with the police, they offered help, food and beverages, and they even gave presents to the kids that were with us. We waited there for an hour, until a small boat arrived and took us from this area to a bigger boat in the middle of the water. In the big boat, we faced an aggressive behavior towards us. They took our clothes off, hit us. They took away our stuff, even the food that was given to us from the Greek people. They insulted us. Even our women, they took off their clothes also. The behavior towards us was as if we weren’t humans, as if we were animals. We arrived to the regional water, and threw me in a very small boat, 1×1 m² approximately, it looks like a balloon, and they blew it with air, and put us all the 20 people in it. It hardly held us all. The size of it wasn’t enough for all of us. And they left us there alone. This is not a boat that you can ride. It doesn’t have an engine or anything. It’s a balloon that needs to be filled up with air, looks like a small pool, and it’s size was 1m x 1m. Three of them were wearing the uniform of the coast Greek police, I knew it from their clothes and because of the sign of the beach on the uniform on their arms, and the color of it was blue. When they moved us from the small boat to the big one, we told them that we have kids with us, a pregnant woman, a 3-month old baby, and another baby who is less than one month old, and asked for going to a hospital. They told us that they will take us to the hospital, however they lied and when we asked again about heading to the hospital, they answered that it will take us 2 hours to get to the nearest hospital, and that it’s better for us to go to the camp that is 1.5 hours far. Along with the three policemen with the uniform, there were four or five persons wearing normal clothes, they were following us in a car after we got caught, while we walked the same 1Km distance to the shore. We were told that three pregnant women among us will be taken to a hospital to get cared of, but again, we met them in the same boat. They were supposed to be the Greek coast police. The boat was a big white boat. Most of the people on the boat were masked. We didn’t understand their language. They were talking in Greek, so we didn’t understand what they were they saying. They won’t even let you communicate with them, because their method was violence and torturing. They took off all of our clothes. Each one of us stayed in their underwear. Sometimes they would take of our underwear too to check what’s underneath. If some of us wanted to hide a cellphone in their underwear, they wouldn’t manage to do so. Even inside of our genitals, they checked there to try to find something. They even did it with women. And we I stood against their behavior, I got hit in the face. They were all men. They took everything from us in the big boat. They took the stuff that was given to us from the people on the island. They took our food and everything we had with us from Turkey. The kids were terrified. They got searched by an adult man, their clothes were taken off, they were treated harshly. When they threw us in the water – in the air-filled balloon-boat, they carried the couple of months old baby from his arm, and threw him from the big boat towards our boat. When they wanted to move us to the balloon-boat, they didn’t let us to get down to it easily, instead they hit us in the back so we will get in the boat faster. Not only were we hit on our backs, but on our legs also. We were thrown on one another. So the 5-month old baby was thrown to this tiny boat while carrying him from his arm, thank god he didn’t get in the water but got caught in our hands. Imagine, even with a couple of month’s old baby. We stayed for half an hour or an hour in the boat, till the rescue Turkish units arrived. The waves moved the boat towards Turkey. In the island we stayed together as one group. There was one who tried to run away, but someone else tipped off about him, so eventually he got caught and brought back to us. There’s nothing much to add, but I just hope that the behavior of the Greek coast’s police will be published enough that the people will know about it, because it was so cruel and harsh, it doesn’t comprehend with a behavior towards human-beings. We faced the worst kinds of behaving.

25-26. Expulsions from Chios on 21 October 2021 (2 interviews)

1-2. Testimony by FMA and FBA Events of 21/10/2021

We left Turkey on 21 October, from Izmir. We were 26 from 10 pm up to 2 am when we landed on Chios Island. We just left the boat at 2 am. So, at first, we were very tired. So, we just slept in the bush. Police came and they just beat 5 among of us. No. they don’t beat all of us. They said “stop running”… 5 of us, tried to run, feeling a lot of fear. That’s why they beat. The rest of us they didn’t beat. When they caught us, they just put us in a car, and we just went all upon the forest. And even there, they checked us. They removed us all the clothes, men and women. They removed the clothes, they just checked us, they took all our phones and they just push us all in small, small, small boat. [So, I just want to make sure and make the timeline straight here. So, on Thursday, the 21st of October, you left Thursday night, to go to Chios. You landed in Chios at 2 am on Friday morning, and then you slept until 10 am at Friday morning, but then at 2 pm the police came and found you and then they took your phones and they held you.] Yes. Then, they just get us in the building until 2 am. [And with the small boats, they took you into the ocean and pushed you back?] Yes. We were at least for 3 hours in the sea, in the ocean. Then they took us, the Turkish police to come us and save us. [So, the 26 of you. How many small boats did they put you onto, out of the 26? Did they put all of you in a boat or did they split you up into different ones?] No, One boat. No different ones. [And so, you’re FMA?] Yes. [Who else is with you right now that’s talking, too? What’s her name?] Her name is FBA but she doesn’t know how to speak English, Arabic.

1. Message de AMT Evènements du 13/11/2021

«Bonsoir Monsieur, c’est de la part de AMT. Je suis désolé de vous écrire sur ce numéro. Nous avons accosté sur l’île Samos vendredi 12 novembre à 6h avec la peur j’ai dû perdre mon sac et, par la suite j’ai été encore maltraité et refoulée par la police Grèce. Nous étions au nombre de 28 dans le convoi. La police Grecque nous a arrêtés dans la ville de Samos hier Samedi. Ils étaient en tenu militaire. Ils nous ont remis entre les mains de ceux qui était vêtus en bleu police d’où j’ai pu avoir le matricule de l’un d’eux qui est le: 247432. Ils nous ont amenés à leur base, nous ont torturés, nous ont dépouillés de tout et nous ont mis dans un petit bus avec des vitres fumées et rideaux où ils nous ont conduits au bord de l’eau, nous ont faits monter par vague dans un petit bateau gonflable qui nous amenait sur leur bateau SY4144 celui qui nous a mis la dernière fois dans les gonflables et ils ont fait le même scénario. Ils avaient déjà jeté 5 de nous directement dans l’eau qui ont été retrouvés par un pêcheur. Nous sommes 17 actuellement à la Police de Turque. Moi particulièrement j’ai été menottée et violée près de l’hôtel «Setella» dans une petite touffe de fleur par 2 policiers puisque ils m’ont arrêtéε seul. Je suis vraiment effrayé 😭.»

2. Message de PAD Evènements du 13/11/2021

«Bonsoir cher Maître, je m’appelle PAD, le vendredi 12 novembre 2021 je faisais partie d’un groupe de 30 personnes qui étaient descendu sur l’île de Samos vers 5h30 am; tôt dans la journée nous avions marché pendant environ 3 heures de temps pour aller se cacher au fond de la brousse pour attendre la tombée de la nuit, ensuite nous avions contacté l’Avocat du Camp, les photos du groupe ont été envoyées ; manque de compréhension et communication entre nous, nous avions décidé de sortir de la brousse, mais nous étions tombés sur un backup up de police qui s’était stationné tout près du Monastère, il était au environ de 20h, certains ont été arrêtés, moi et un autre frère ont réussi à s’échapper, et nous avons dormi dans la forêt. Le lendemain, samedi 13 novembre vers 7h50 am, moi et mon frère ont quitté la forêt, nous avons pris la route pour entrer dans la ville, malheureusement une voiture de police nous a vus, et nous a amenés au poste de police situé hors de la ville. Et en arrivant au poste j’ai fait la connaissance avec le diable: les policiers se cagoulaient, ils battaient les immigrants, moi ils m’ont dépouillé de tout (1 téléphone Sony blanc+ 1 sac à dos noir contenant vêtements, chaussures et nourritures + 105 euro), ensuite ils m’ont tabassé au niveau de ma tête et mon corps, je devenais comme sourd pendant environ 20 ou 30 minutes. Après plus d’une heure de souffrances, ils sont allés nous jeter dans un canot pneumatique de piscine sur la mer sans même prendre la peine de fermer le bouchon de la valve à air, et au même moment le petit canot commençait à se plier vu la supériorité de la charge et l’éjection de l’air dans la valve, et nous étions tous paniqués, mais grâce à Dieu j’avais réussi à fermer la valve à air et la Garde Côte Turc était arrivé à temps pour nous secourir. »

3. Message de SF Evènements du 13/11/2021

Bonjour Monsieur, je m’appelle SF. J’ai été à Samos le 13 Novembre 2021 pour rentrer au camp des réfugiés mais les cagoulés nous ont pris et nous ont tout dépouillés et puis il nous ont abandonnés sur une île isolée où je suis tombée dans l’eau et c’est l’un des pêcheurs qui m’a sauvée de la noyade.

4. Testimony of FA Events of 13/11/2021

I left on the 12th of November this year from the seaside of Izmir. Our boat left around 4am in the morning. That was Friday. We arrived at Samos Island around 6am on that same Friday. We were 27 of us in the boat. We had 10 women and 13 men. No children. We didn’t have any kids. All of us were from Africa from different nationalities. We had Guineas, Ivorian, Cameroonian and Congolese. When we arrived at the Samos Island at about 6am on that Friday, Friday 12th of November 2021 we managed to hide inside the forest because there were police people in the forest, the Greek police, the pushback police were in the forest. We saw some of them but they didn’t see us while we were still in the forest because we were hiding. When we arrived at the island, we split into two groups. My group we were 14 of us while the other group 13 people. So, for my own group, when we were hiding, we saw some of the police, the pushback people, Greek police, in the forest, but they didn’t see us because we were hiding. They didn’t see us. So, after that we stayed in the forest the whole of that day until 11pm in the day we started walking to enter the town. We were mixed. Men and women. Around 11pm we started moving to the town. We walked until around 4:30am in the morning, that’s on Saturday, we arrived at the monastery. I saw the church and I think that was the entrance of the city. So, we continued, we crossed the monastery until we arrived at the main street, the main road. At 4:30am in the morning we were at the monastery, at the church in Samos. By that time no police people had seen us. We were lucky that none of them saw us. We walked until 5:30am it was getting to morning, so we arrived at the main street, the main road in Samos. We had the map of the camp so we were trying to get to the camp by leg. We tried to call a lawyer. I don’t know if it was a man or a woman. The problem is when we arrived the person didn’t reply. We sent messages, we sent pictures, we sent voice, no reply. So that’s how we started struggling on our own if we can get to the camp on our own. So, at that morning at 5:30am while we were descending, we were already inside the town, we were descending following the maps that they gave us, there was a vehicle, a vehicle was coming up. It had flash lights so therefore it was a police vehicle. When they flashed their lights in our direction, all of us, we dispersed. There were 14 of us and we dispersed. I for one I fell into a very deep valley. I thought to myself maybe I’m going to die. I didn’t know if I would come out alive. It was dark and everybody was running. We had two people who had phones. I didn’t have a phone. My phone was with one of the leaders. I had injuries but it wasn’t that serious. Maybe God was with me. Because the leaders were the only ones who had phones. They didn’t want us to have phones because of the pushbacks. When you put on your phone it will attract them and they can track us where we are hiding. It was night and I couldn’t see what was happening. I managed to go out of the valley into which I fell and I struggled to climb back to the street. That night I managed to hide in the forest, where I slept there all alone. It was already six o’clock so I slept for about two hours. I can’t say sleep I just hid myself. When it was morning, I descended back to the same road where we dispersed last night and I continued the same road we were taking. For me, I was trying my luck. Maybe I was going to see a vehicle that would pick me up and take me to the camp. I had no phone. I didn’t know where the others were because we had dispersed that night. So, everybody was hiding, everybody was worrying for his or her own safety. When I was descending, I walked some meters and the police was there. The police were there, they were doing control. They caught me. They arrested me. They handcuffed me. They took us to their bus, where I met other people, I met so many people, some of which we were together, mixed with Somalians, we were 40 of us, migrants. Their uniform was dark blue. Their uniforms. And even their bus was dark blue. The big blue bus with the barred windows. When we got to the bus, they searched us one by one. It was a man that was doing the search. A Greek policeman. Both for men and for women. By that time, they had removed the handcuffs from my hands. They made me naked, they removed my clothes, searching for money. They said “euro, euro, euro”. I had 150 euros that I was hiding, inside me. I said I had no money. They searched me, removed my clothes, my bra, everything, my breasts were outside. Everything, I was being naked in front of them. They search you and when they finish, they say you go now enter the bus. I was being naked in front of the other police officers. The police man that was doing the search, he had gloves on his hands. He used the same glove for all the women. He put his finger inside your vagina to look for money. That’s how they removed the money from my body, I had 150 euros. I had no choice. All I was thinking was to be set free because they used to keep people. That was all that was in my mind. No matter what I just wanted to be free -you understand? – because I was really scared. It was somehow… I don’t know… They traumatized me for a long time. I couldn’t believe my eyes. So, they do this search for every single person. The same with both men and women. Now in the bus, they packed all of us in the same bus. While in the bus, you would sit on top of another person, another person would sit on top of you, all of us in that same bus. In the bus they put blinds so that people from outside cannot see what was happening inside the bus. The asked us to bend our head. They don’t allow us to look at their faces. They put blind and they asked us to not look outside. In the bus they just packed us they treated us like, I don’t know, like baggage. It’s not like you sit on your own sit. It was too many of us. They don’t even care they just say “ela, ela, ela, ela, ela, ela, ela”. They carry us now to the water, to the seaside. I couldn’t understand what they were saying but they were talking about “kios, kios, kios” so I think the place where they took us to push us back was called “Kios”. So, when we arrived at the water, they put us in small boats and they drove us 15km inside the water and they pushed us in plastic boats. No engine, nothing. They had collected every phone from everybody. They collected everything, the phones, the money, everything. They hit me! When they saw the money inside my body, they hit me. I said I have no money. They hit me on the back with their hands. They hit others especially men. They kicked them. The way they treat men… They hit us before they take you in the bus. I saw other people from my group. We were 7 of us on that same boat. There are some from our group who managed to get to the camp. I think some people from our group are in the camp now. When they put you in the small boats, they just push you. They don’t care if you fall inside the water. They push you anyhow. If you fall into the water, that’s not their problem. There are other groups who, 8 of them, from that other group, they put them in the water. No boat. Because them, they caught them in the night. So, they just push them in the water. When they put us in the plastic boat, there were some fishermen who saw us. They called the coast guard, they called for a rescue team from Turkey. So, they came and rescued us. When we got to Turkey, I saw other people that we were in the same boat, but different groups. They said they pushed them inside the water without any boat. I don’t know how to swim and the other people too, they don’t know how to swim. All of us who were pushed buck, we managed to survive. Nobody died.
